What’s up with SUPs (Single Use Plastics)?

Single use plastics are used to give out food and beverages on the go. In hospitality services plastics have offered a real solution, but with current effects in climate change we all have to take action.

Often plastic cups end up in nature as you can see in the image above. These can't be composted and will leave an impact for centuries. Edibles cups are bio-degradable, so when they do end up in nature they are not a threat to the eco-system.

Why stop using plastic?

Here are several reasons why someone might choose to stop using plastic cups or other single use plastics:

  1. Environmental impact: Plastic cups and containers are typically made from non-biodegradable materials, which means they can persist in the environment for hundreds of years, contributing to pollution and harming wildlife.
  2. Health concerns: Some types of plastic cups can release harmful chemicals into drinks, especially when heated or when used repeatedly. Bisphenol A (BPA) is a common example of a chemical used in plastic production that has been linked to health problems.
  3. Micro and nano plastics: The more plastic items one uses, the more micro- and nano plastics you will release. What exactly the influence of these is on our health and the environment is unclear.
  4. Cost-effective alternatives: There are a number of alternatives to plastic cups that are cost-effective and environmentally friendly. For example, reusable glass or stainless steel cups are durable and long-lasting, and can be reused multiple times.
  5. Social responsibility: Many individuals and companies have made a commitment to reducing their environmental impact and promoting sustainability. Switching from plastic cups to alternative options is one way to demonstrate this commitment.

Overall, reducing plastic use and promoting sustainability is an important step towards protecting our environment and our health, and there are many compelling reasons to stop using plastic cups.
